MAMAA was formed in 1993 by five mothers who were no longer prepared to sit by and watch our society disintegrate into the kind of place where fear for the safety of our children as murders, bullying, instances of joy-riding and other aggressive behaviour continued to rise.

The death of James Bulger shocked everyone as video recordings brought into our homes the full horror of his abduction. The number of people who saw a small, distressed child yet did not intervene, assuming nothing was seriously wrong, left us all wondering how such a terrible event could ever have happened in our society.
