MAMAA Believes that:

Victim’s families must have the right to:-

  • Receive full information and explanation about the progress of their case from the outset – this information to be given sensitively whether written or oral
  • Provide information to officials responsible for decisions relating to the offender
  • Have legal advice available, regardless of their means
  • Respect and recognition at all stages of the criminal justice proceedings
  • Provide an impact statement to the court detailing how the murder of their loved one has affected them and the extended family. They also need to be aware that they are allowed to do this but it is read at the discretion of the judge.
  • Representation of the victim at the trial
  • Be listened to and heard and to be able to make contact whenever they want to and make their own decisions
  • Protection both for their privacy and for their physical safety
  • Practical support – day to day household chores are no longer normal
  • Specialist support for vulnerable family members i.e.: children and those that are elderly, disabled or ill and special considerations given for religious beliefs and customs
  • Ongoing support for as long as it is needed – not just in the aftermath of murder
  • Confidence and confidentiality in all agencies working with them
