TRIBUTE TO PAT REGAN
We are all shocked and very sad to hear the terrible news this morning that Pat has been murdered. Since the death of her son Danny to gun crime in 2002 Pat has devoted her life to working with young people to try to ensure they do not get involved in crime.
Pat worked in schools and youth centres and reached over 1000 young people, talking to them about the devastating effects and consequences of carrying and using weapons. Her work was unfunded and unpaid and she worked long into the night and early hours of the morning, and often didn't even have enough money for a cup of tea on the train home, because she gave her all to everyone in her determination to stop violence on our streets
Her death is a tragedy not just for her family, and not just for many more young people she would have reached, but for all the support groups and parents all over the country who she touched with her genuine warmth and friendship. Despite her own personal tragedies she had a great sense of humanity and humour. There was never any side to Pat and for all of us that had the privilege to know her, work with her, and loved her I am sure we will all remember her most for her total honesty.
Today we are all reeling from this news and finding it hard to accept that a woman who did so much good for so many could have lost her own life in such a violent way. Its easy to say nice things when people are gone, but we never met anyone who did not like Pat. A truly inspirational and lovely lady who leaves a huge gap in the lives of us all.
Our deepest sympathy and thoughts are with her family and we hope she is at peace with Danny
